The 1st Saturday race started off as usual with about 20 odd riders in my group which was the limit group. My group had a head start of 30mins on the elites as this was a handicap race and pretty soon the pace was high. Cootamundra is an undulating 77-80 Klm course with plenty of smaller grade hills that test the legs. When we came to the first intermediate sprint point in the race, i started sprinting against another rider, and just as we approached the sprint line we were overtaken by a rider slipstreaming us, and the chances of one of us taking the first intermediate sprint vanished in a second.
As the race progressed, many riders were dropped off the back until there were only five of us left. We stayed in this group for a considerable distance however, what I didn't realise was that the rider that won the first sprint was an extremely strong cyclist, so much so that he also won the second sprint point. The pace was really high, and this rider pushed us hard until i couldn't keep up the pace anymore, and at about the 65 Klm point i pulled back from my group. A while later I was passed by the elite riders, and by one more group, but I managed to beat another group coming up behind me on the uphill finish. The strong rider in my group was first across the line ahead of all others, and took out line honours for this race. I maintained my fifth place within this group and came 26th overall across the line, and was extremely happy with my efforts. I did not race on the Sunday though.
This was a Cycling New South Wales event, therefore as always I wore the ADF colours with pride and was happy to see another ADF rider that participated as well, albeit in another group.
